NYC Capital Project Detail Data Geometries
This is a lookup table for associating a geographic point geometry (latitude & longitude) with each project ID in the dataset chriswhong/nyc_capital_project_detail_data.
The system of record for NYC capital project accounting in NYC treats projects as
citywide or assigns them to a borough. Of those that are assigned a borough, they may attribute them to one or more community districts (the smallest administrative district that NYC government services are tracked in). This means that discrete granular mapping of capital projects is not possible.
This dataset is a community-driven attempt to assign a geometry to all projects so that we can have a citywide spatial view of capital spending, and have the ability to spatial analysis of capital spending (e.g. determine how many dollars were spent on parks within 1⁄2 mile of a given address, etc)
The source of the capital project cost data in
chriswhong/nyc_capital_project_detail_data is the “Capital Project Detail Data” PDFs published by the New York City Mayor’s Office of Management and Budget. See this blog post for a full background on NYC capital project data and some examples of maps that can be generated once we have geometries for the full dataset.
Crowdsourced Geolocation Effort
The data are actively maintained in an Airtable, with members of the community taking on one or more of NYC’s community districts. Geocoding is a best-effort based on information available in the other fields for a given project.
The airtable is committed to this dataset periodically using a locally-run script.
Instructions for how to help out with this effort are located in this Google Doc.
